What Is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a licensed health care profession that uses gentle manipulation of the spine or other parts of the body to restore normal, healthy function to joints, tissue and nerves, alleviate pain, and support the body's natural ability to heal itself. It is a drug-free, hands-on method of care that includes patient examination, diagnosis, and treatment. In fact, the word “chiropractic” comes from the Greek words “cheir” (hand) and “praktos” (done), which means “to be done by hand.”
What Is Chiropractic's Origin?
Chiropractic, in its present form, has been around since 1895 when D.D. Palmer performed a chiropractic adjustment that was reported to improve the hearing of a partially deaf man. It is not the only profession originating from the premise that many health problems can be linked to problems in the spine. Osteopathy also originated back in the 1800's with this same understanding. In fact, spinal manipulation, used as a treatment for disease, existed in the days of Hippocrates and was actually performed by "the father of medicine" himself.
